The emerald cut uses long, flat step facets instead of the brilliant facets of a round. Rather than sparkle, it gives broad flashes of light and a clear "hall of mirrors" look into the stone. A bezel wraps a smooth rim of metal right round the diamond instead of holding it with claws. It protects the edge of the stone, sits low on the finger and has nothing to catch on clothes or hair, so it suits an active life and everyday wear.
