The stone itself is as hard as any diamond, but its sharp corners can chip if knocked. That is why every corner on our princess settings is protected by its own claw.
The metal rim covers the very edge of the stone, so it can look a touch smaller than in claws. In return the diamond is fully protected, and the clean frame gives a crisp, modern outline.
