Why Choose a 9ct Gold Wedding Ring?
9ct gold is 37.5% pure gold, alloyed with silver, copper and other metals to make it hard-wearing. It is real, solid gold, not plated or filled, and every ring is hallmarked 375 at the Assay Office. Because it holds half the pure gold of 18ct, a 9ct wedding ring costs noticeably less, and the saving grows with the width and weight of the band. That makes 9ct a good choice for a wide or heavy men's ring, or for a couple buying two rings at once.
A wedding ring is worn every day for decades, so toughness matters. 9ct is a harder alloy than 18ct, so it takes knocks well and keeps its shape. Like any gold, it will pick up fine marks over the years; a polish brings back the shine.
9ct White, Yellow or Rose Gold
9ct yellow gold is a softer, lighter yellow than 18ct. It suits most skin tones and sits well beside older yellow gold jewellery.
9ct white gold is rhodium plated for a bright white finish. Over a year or two the plating can wear and a warmer tone may show; a quick re-plate brings it back. If you want a ring that stays white all the way through, choose platinum.
9ct rose gold has more copper in the alloy, which gives it a warm pink that never wears away.
Our pictures show each ring in its 18ct colour. 9ct yellow is a touch paler and 9ct rose a little pinker, so if the exact shade matters, ask us for a photo of a finished ring.
Choosing the Profile, Width and Weight
Profile is the shape of the band in cross-section. Court is rounded inside and out, and the most comfortable to wear. Soft court is a lighter version of court. Flat court is flat on top and rounded inside. D shape is rounded on top and flat inside. Flat is square-edged, and concave dips gently across the top for a modern look.
Width: 2mm to 3mm is slim and sits neatly beside an engagement ring; 4mm to 5mm is the most popular all-rounder; 6mm to 8mm makes a bolder band and is the usual choice for men's rings.
Weight: each ring comes in Budget, Luxury and Premiere weights. A heavier ring is deeper and more solid on the finger and lasts longer, and costs more in gold. Every product page shows the price for each option.
Matching Your Engagement Ring
If your engagement ring is 9ct gold, a 9ct wedding ring in the same colour will wear at the same rate and look the same over the years. If your engagement ring is 18ct or platinum, we usually suggest the same metal for the wedding ring as well, because a harder metal worn against a softer one slowly wears it down. Getting the Size Right
Wider bands fit more snugly than narrow ones, so if you are choosing 6mm or more you may need a quarter or half size larger than usual. Use our free ring sizer, or the ring size converter if you know your size in another country's system.
