How to Choose a Wedding Ring

A wedding ring is the one piece of jewellery most people wear every day for the rest of their lives, so it is worth getting the details right. Start with three questions: which metal, how wide, and whether you want diamonds. If you already have an engagement ring, it answers the first one for you.

Plain, diamond-set or designer?

  • Plain wedding rings are the classic choice and the most comfortable for everyday wear. Design yours in 3D, choosing the profile, width, weight, metal and finish.
  • Diamond wedding rings add sparkle: fully set bands with diamonds all the way round, half set bands with diamonds across the top, and diamond scatter bands with stones set into the metal.
  • Designer wedding rings include wishbone and shaped bands that curve around an engagement ring, jacket rings, Celtic and patterned bands, and two-colour gold.

Wedding Ring Profiles

The profile is the shape of the band seen end on. It changes how the ring looks and how it feels to wear.

  • Court: rounded outside and inside. The comfort-fit classic and the most popular choice.
  • Soft court: rounded all the way across, so it looks slimmer than a court ring of the same width.
  • Flat court: a flat top with a comfort-fit rounded inside, for a clean, modern look.
  • D shape: a rounded top and a flat inside. The traditional British wedding band.
  • Flat and concave: straight-sided or gently dished on top, for a crisp, contemporary finish.

Which Width Is Right?

As a guide, 2mm to 3mm sits neatly next to an engagement ring, 4mm is the most popular all-round width, and 5mm to 8mm makes a bolder band, the usual choice for men. Ladies' plain wedding rings are made from 2mm to 6mm wide and men's from 3mm to 8mm, each in a light, medium or heavy weight. A heavier band has more depth of metal, so it feels more substantial and wears better over the decades.

Platinum, 18ct or 9ct Gold?

  • Platinum 950 is 95% pure: naturally white, dense and very hard-wearing, and the best match for a platinum engagement ring.
  • 18ct gold is 75% gold, in white, yellow or rose, with a rich colour. White gold is rhodium plated for a bright white finish, which can be refreshed over the years.
  • 9ct gold is 37.5% gold: harder-wearing and more affordable, with a softer colour.

A wedding ring worn next to an engagement ring is best made in the same metal, so the two wear evenly and one does not scratch the other.

Matching Your Engagement Ring

Look at how your engagement ring sits on the finger. If the setting is high enough, a straight band will sit flush against it. If the centre stone or halo sits low, choose a wishbone or shaped band that curves around it. Match the metal, and keep the width close to your engagement ring's band so the pair looks balanced. Not sure? Send us a photo of your engagement ring on WhatsApp and we will suggest bands that fit it, or make one to fit with our bespoke design service.

Men's Wedding Rings

A 5mm to 6mm court or flat court band in platinum or 18ct gold is a timeless choice for him. A brushed or hammered finish suits anyone who wants something less shiny, and men's diamond rings add a single stone or a row of diamonds set into the band. See all men's rings, or matching his and hers rings made as a pair.

Ring Sizes and Comfort Fit

Plain wedding rings are made in UK sizes F to Z+7. Wider bands fit more snugly, so for 6mm and above many people go up a quarter or half size. If you are not sure of your size, order a free ring sizer or use our ring size converter.

How Much Does a Wedding Ring Cost?

The price depends mostly on the metal and how much of it there is: width and weight, then any diamonds. For the same band, 9ct gold costs least, 18ct gold more, and platinum the most, because it is denser and purer. Every ring page shows the price in each metal, and the ring designer prices a plain band as you build it, so you can compare like for like.

Made to Order and Hallmarked

Every wedding ring is made to order for your finger size and hallmarked to show its precious metal content: 950 for platinum, 750 for 18ct gold and 375 for 9ct gold. We are a family jeweller, making rings since 1969, and a member of the National Association of Jewellers.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the UK, the wedding ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, the same finger as the engagement ring. Many people wear the wedding ring first, closest to the hand, with the engagement ring above it. In some countries, including Germany, Norway and Russia, it is traditionally worn on the right hand.

Many brides move the engagement ring to the right hand for the ceremony, so the wedding ring can go on first, then move it back afterwards so the wedding ring sits beneath it. Others keep it on and add the wedding ring above. Either is fine.

There is no rule. The price depends on the metal, the width and weight of the band, and any diamonds. For the same design, 9ct gold costs least, then 18ct gold, then platinum. Each ring page shows the price in every metal, so you can compare.

Match the metal, keep the width close to your engagement ring's band, and check whether a straight band sits flush against it. If the setting sits low, a wishbone or shaped band curves around it. You can send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will suggest bands that fit.

Platinum 950 is naturally white, heavier and very hard-wearing. 18ct gold has a richer colour and comes in white, yellow and rose. If you already have an engagement ring, choose the same metal so the two wear evenly.

2mm to 3mm sits neatly next to an engagement ring, 4mm is the most popular all-round width, and 5mm to 8mm suits a bolder band, usually for men. Wider bands fit more snugly, so for 6mm and above many people go up a quarter or half size.

A court ring is rounded on the outside and the inside, so it slides over the knuckle easily and sits comfortably all day. It is the most popular wedding ring profile. A D shape ring is rounded on top but flat inside, the traditional British style.

Every ring is made to order, which takes 3 to 4 weeks. Ordering two to three months before the wedding leaves time to check the size and add an engraving without any rush.

Yes. Plain wedding rings made in our ring designer can be engraved inside with up to 24 characters, in a Roman or script font, and you see the engraving in 3D before you order. For other rings, ask us.

Yes. Every wedding ring is hallmarked to show its precious metal content: 950 for platinum, 750 for 18ct gold and 375 for 9ct gold.
