What Is an Eternity Ring?

An eternity ring is a band set with a continuous row of diamonds, the unbroken line standing for never-ending love. It is traditionally given to mark a milestone: a big wedding anniversary, the birth of a first child, or simply to say thank you for the years together. Many people wear it next to their wedding and engagement rings as a matching set. Read our full guide to eternity rings: what they mean, when to give one and how to wear it.

Full or Half Eternity?

  • Full eternity rings have diamonds all the way round the band, so they sparkle from every angle. They hold the most diamonds, and because the band is set all the way round they are made in your exact size.
  • Half eternity rings have diamonds across the top of the band only. They cost less, feel smoother between the fingers, and can be resized later.

When Do You Give an Eternity Ring?

There is no fixed rule. The most popular moments are a first, tenth or twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, the birth of a baby, a special birthday, or a vow renewal. Some couples choose one instead of a wedding band.

How to Wear an Eternity Ring

In the UK it is usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, with the wedding ring first, closest to the hand, then the engagement ring, then the eternity ring on top. Others wear it on the right hand or as a stacking ring on its own. Choose a band of a similar width and the same metal as your other rings so the stack sits evenly.

Which Metal?

  • Platinum is naturally white, dense and very hard-wearing, and holds diamonds securely for decades.
  • 18ct white gold is rhodium plated for a bright white finish, and costs less than platinum.
  • 18ct yellow gold and 18ct rose gold give a warm, classic or vintage look.

Every ring is made in 100% recycled precious metal and hallmarked: 950 for platinum and 750 for 18ct gold.

Lab Grown or Natural Diamonds?

Every eternity ring can be made with lab grown or natural diamonds. Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds, chemically and optically the same as natural ones, and cost less, so ours come in F colour, VVS clarity as standard. Natural diamonds are G colour, VS clarity. You choose on the ring page and the price updates straight away.

Width and Style

Bands run from 1mm, a fine stacking ring, to 5mm and more for a statement piece. Around 2mm to 3mm sits neatly beside most engagement rings. For a ring that curves around an engagement ring, see our wishbone eternity rings, and for colour, our coloured stone eternity rings with sapphires, rubies and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

A band set with a continuous row of diamonds, symbolising never-ending love. It is usually given to mark an anniversary, the birth of a child or another milestone, and is often worn with a wedding and engagement ring.

A full eternity ring has diamonds all the way round the band. A half eternity ring has diamonds across the top only, so it costs less, is more comfortable for everyday wear and can be resized later.

Most often on a wedding anniversary, such as the first, tenth or twenty-fifth, on the birth of a child, or at a vow renewal. There is no fixed rule: any moment worth celebrating is the right time.

Usually the fourth finger of the left hand, next to the wedding and engagement rings, with the wedding ring closest to the hand. It can also be worn on the right hand or on its own as a stacking ring.

Yes, on every eternity ring. Lab grown diamonds come in F colour, VVS clarity as standard and cost less; natural diamonds are G colour, VS clarity. You choose on the ring page and see the price for each.

A half eternity ring can usually be resized, because the back of the band is plain metal. A full eternity ring is set all the way round, so it is made to your exact size. If you are unsure, order a free ring sizer first.

Platinum is the most hard-wearing and naturally white. 18ct white gold gives the same look for less, and 18ct yellow or rose gold a warmer one. Match the metal of your engagement and wedding rings so they wear evenly.
