Marquise Diamonds

The marquise is a long, boat-shaped diamond with a point at each end. It looks larger for its carat weight than any other shape. Compare certified natural and lab grown marquise diamonds below. Buy a loose marquise diamond on its own, or have it set to order in our workshop.

What is a marquise cut diamond?
A marquise, also called a navette, is an elongated brilliant cut with two pointed ends. Its long outline spreads the weight of the diamond across a large surface area, so a 1 carat marquise looks noticeably bigger than a 1 carat round. It has a bold, vintage character and lengthens the look of the finger.
How to choose a marquise diamond
Length-to-width ratio
Between 1.75 and 2.25 gives the classic marquise shape. Lower ratios look shorter and fuller; higher ratios look very long and slim.
Symmetry and the bow-tie
Both points should line up and the two halves should mirror each other, so check the symmetry grade and the photo. Most marquises show a darker bow-tie across the middle; a soft one is normal, a strong one makes the centre look dark.
Colour and clarity
Colour can show at the points, so G or H is a good choice in white metal. VS2 or SI1 is usually clean to the eye, but avoid inclusions near the points, where they can weaken the stone.
Marquise vs oval and pear
All three are elongated brilliant cuts. The marquise is the longest and most dramatic, the pear has one point and one rounded end, and the oval has no points at all.
Popular Marquise diamond sizes
Most of our customers choose between 1 and 3 carats. Start with one of these sizes, or use the carat filter above for anything else:
- 1 carat marquise diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 1.5 carat marquise diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 2 carat marquise diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 3 carat marquise diamonds: natural or lab grown
- 5 carat marquise diamonds: natural or lab grown
Setting your marquise diamond
The two points are the most delicate part of a marquise, so we hold each one with a V-shaped claw. It looks elegant as a solitaire or flanked by small round diamonds. Every ring is made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK. Browse our marquise engagement rings, or design your own around the diamond you choose here.
You can also build a ring in 3D with Ring Maker, starting with a marquise diamond, or see the shape in marquise diamond earrings and marquise diamond pendants.
Marquise Diamonds: your questions answered
Does a marquise diamond look bigger than other shapes?
Yes. A marquise has the largest face-up area for its carat weight of any common shape, so it looks bigger than a round, oval or pear of the same weight.
What ratio should a marquise diamond have?
Between 1.75 and 2.25 is the classic range. Choose lower for a fuller stone or higher for a long, slender look.
How are the points of a marquise protected?
Each point is held in a V-shaped claw, which protects it from knocks and chipping. We set every marquise this way.
What is the bow-tie effect in a marquise?
A darker area across the centre where light passes through instead of reflecting back. A faint bow-tie is normal; check the photo or ask us to look at the stone.
Can I buy a loose marquise diamond?
Yes. Every diamond on this page can be bought loose, with its grading certificate: choose Buy the Diamond on the stone you like, and it is usually delivered in 7 to 10 days. Or choose Add Jewellery to have it set in a ring, earrings or a pendant, made to order in our Bourton-on-the-Water workshop and hallmarked in the UK.
