What is an elongated cushion cut diamond?
An elongated cushion is a cushion cut stretched into a gentle rectangle, with rounded corners, curved sides and large brilliant facets. The longer outline looks larger for its carat weight than a square cushion and lengthens the look of the finger, which has made it one of the most requested shapes for engagement rings.
How to choose an elongated cushion
Choosing the ratio
The ratio is the diamond's length divided by its width, from the certificate measurements. Between 1.15 and 1.25 gives a subtle, softly rectangular look; 1.25 to 1.35 is the most popular, clearly elongated range; above 1.40 the stone becomes long and slim. Every stone here is shown with its own photo, because two cushions with the same ratio can still look quite different.
Colour and clarity
Colour can gather slightly at the ends of a longer stone, so G or H is a good choice in white metal. VS2 or SI1 clarity is usually clean to the eye.
Elongated cushion vs oval and radiant
An oval has no corners and the most sparkle of the three. An elongated radiant has straight, trimmed corners and a crisp, modern look. The elongated cushion sits between them, with soft corners and a warm, vintage sparkle.
