What is an emerald cut diamond?
An emerald cut is a rectangle with cut corners and rows of long, flat facets running parallel to its edges, called step facets. Instead of the scattered sparkle of a round, it gives broad flashes of light and a clear, open table, often described as a hall of mirrors. It is a refined choice that suits a simple solitaire especially well.
How to choose an emerald cut diamond
Clarity matters more
The large, open facets show the inside of the diamond clearly, so inclusions are easier to see than in a brilliant cut. We suggest VS2 or better, and checking photos of any SI stone carefully.
Colour
Step cuts show body colour a little more than brilliant cuts. G or better looks crisp and white; H can work well in yellow or rose gold.
Length-to-width ratio
Between 1.30 and 1.50 gives the classic emerald cut proportions. Closer to 1.30 looks more compact; nearer 1.50 or above gives a longer, slimmer stone.
Emerald vs radiant diamonds
Both are rectangles with cut corners. An emerald cut has step facets and long, calm flashes of light; a radiant has brilliant facets and much more sparkle, and is more forgiving of inclusions. For a square step cut, look at the Asscher.
