Why diamond-set shoulders?
Diamond-set shoulders add a row of small diamonds part way down the band on each side of the centre stone. They add sparkle and lead the eye to the centre diamond, while the plain lower band keeps the ring comfortable and easy to resize.
The princess cut diamond
The princess cut is a square brilliant: crisp straight sides, sharp corners and a lively, criss-cross sparkle. It is the most popular fancy shape, and because more of the rough crystal is kept when it is cut, a princess often costs less than a round of the same weight.
Choosing your princess diamond
Look for a length-to-width ratio between 1.00 and 1.05 for a true square. The corners are the most delicate part of a princess cut, so each one is held by its own claw. A G to H colour and SI1 clarity give a clean, bright look for the money.
Platinum or gold?
Platinum is naturally white, hard-wearing and the most secure choice for the claws that hold your diamond. 18ct white, yellow and rose gold cost a little less, and 9ct gold less again. Shop by metal: platinum, 18ct white gold, 18ct yellow gold or 18ct rose gold.
